Common questions about Wi-Fi HaLow

Wi-Fi HaLow suits any application where devices are spread over a large area, sit behind walls or obstacles, or run on battery power, indoors or outdoors. Common uses include:

Wi-Fi HaLow lets one network cover an entire site with fewer access points, simpler installations, and lower running costs than short-range or cellular alternatives. What that looks like in practice:

  • One access point instead of several: up to 10x the range, or 100x the area, of conventional Wi-Fi, so a site that once needed numerous access points can be covered by far fewer.
  • Reaches difficult locations: 2 to 5x better wall and floor penetration connects devices in basements, across yards, and behind obstacles.
  • High speeds at range: over 1,000 times faster than LoRaWAN, sufficient for video, images, audio, and firmware updates.
  • Low power by design: built-in power-saving features and efficient transmission reduce how often battery devices need servicing.
  • Standard Wi-Fi with IP networking and WPA3 security, requiring no SIM, subscription, proprietary protocol, or translation gateway.

Wi-Fi HaLow uses the sub-1 GHz band, while the Wi-Fi in your home and office uses the higher 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands, and that lower frequency travels much farther and passes through walls and floors far more easily, giving up to 10x the range. Peak speed is lower, by design: Wi-Fi HaLow uses channels as narrow as 1 MHz, against the 20 MHz or more of home Wi-Fi, trading raw speed for range and efficiency. That suits the devices it is built for, like cameras, sensors, and locks, rather than high-speed uses like streaming, gaming, and laptops. Everything else is standard Wi-Fi: the same IP networking, WPA3 security, and Wi-Fi Alliance certification.

Wi-Fi HaLow is a long-range, low-power version of Wi-Fi. It can connect many devices at up to 10x the distance or 100x the coverage of conventional Wi-Fi. A single access point can cover an entire home, building, or site, reach through walls and floors, and keep hundreds of battery-powered devices connected. It is genuine Wi-Fi, with the same IP networking, WPA3 security, and Wi-Fi Alliance certification, so it fits existing networks without a separate gateway or carrier.
